Look for the Hidden Links

When people talk about great entrepreneurial successes like Apple CEO Steve Jobs, they tend to describe them with terms like “visionary,” “genius,” and “trendsetter.” But what if we told you that some of Jobs’ most revolutionary ideas—like iTunes and the iPod—weren’t inventions he created out of thin air? In fact, the concepts for both already existed: one inside the head of an Apple consultant, the other at a much smaller tech company. As the Harvard Business Review’s Dan Palotta explains, Jobs’ game-changing innovation was when he recognized how the two could interface: using software to enhance the portable music experience. In other words, Jobs didn’t bring Apple back from the brink by making something entirely new. He did it by seeing something others didn’t because he looked for the hidden links.

Steve Jobs is generally regarded as one of the business world’s biggest thinkers, dreaming up wildly successful products and reshaping the technology landscape again and again. But, contrary to what you might assume, the way of thinking needed to find the missing link between two existing products or ideas doesn’t come from thinking big. It actually comes from thinking SMALL.

Andy you can do it, too. Start by taking a moment every day to look around and really see what’s in front of you. Then, take time to imagine. Look at two seemingly disparate objects and ask yourself how they could work together. Not all of them will be winning business ideas—in fact some might be silly enough to make you laugh—but over time, you will adapt to a new way of thinking that can possibly open new doors.

When you look at the world through the close-up lens of SMALL, you see things more clearly and opportunities you might normally overlook when adopting the “big breakthrough” mentality begin to reveal themselves one by one. It doesn’t happen overnight, but when you gradually train your brain to find magic in the SMALL, you can discover tiny opportunities. And that, in turn, can have an enormous payoff.

Apple’s success with Jobs’ “missing link” discovery isn’t an anomaly in the business world. Quite the opposite: it’s the norm. Many of the world’s most profitable businesses are based on products that linked two pre-existing concepts together to create something entirely new. So what will you see when you start thinking small? As Marcel Proust once wrote, “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.”
